Secondary School Exchange Programmes

Secondary school student exchange programmes in New Zealand are regulated by the Ministry of Education. All NZCIE members are registered and approved to carry out secondary exchange programmes.

Secondary exchange programmes provide New Zealand students, typically aged 15-18 years, with the opportunity to live and study overseas for up to 1 year.  Overseas students come to New Zealand on similar programmes.

Students live with a host family and attend school.  They become immersed in the local community and live like a local. The benefits that flow from the experience are significant and include:
  • Greater awareness and tolerance of other cultures
  • Significantly improved language skills
  • Increased independence and maturity

NZCIE  members take seriously the duty of care toward their exchange students and provide local and national level support both in New Zealand  and overseas throughout the programmes.
